Our Areas of Research

At the ICT4D Research Lab, we are committed to a diverse array of research themes that focus on how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can foster sustainable development. Our research areas are both broad and deep, addressing numerous sectors and embracing both established and emerging technologies.

Theoretical Frameworks for ICT4D

We study and construct theoretical frameworks that guide the development and implementation of ICT in developing contexts. This research helps inform the most effective and efficient ways to utilize technology for sustainable development.

Emerging Technologies

We explore the potential of emerging technologies such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR). Our focus is on how these technologies can drive growth and development across various sectors including business, agriculture, health, education, and public administration.

Open Data for Development (OD4D)

We investigate how open data can contribute to sustainable development. This includes studying data accessibility, data management, and the role of open data in transparency and decision-making.

ICT4D Policies and Strategies

We research the policies and strategies that govern the use of ICT in development. Our work contributes to understanding how legislation, regulation, and governance affect ICT's ability to foster sustainable development.

Adoption and Diffusion of ICTs

Our researchers analyze the factors that influence the adoption and diffusion of ICTs in various communities and sectors. We seek to understand the barriers and enablers of technology acceptance and usage.

Social Computing and social media for Development

We investigate how social computing and social media can facilitate development. Our work in this area ranges from studying online communities to exploring the use of social media in awareness campaigns and social movements.

E-Government, E-Participation, E-Democracy

We research how digital technologies can enhance governance and foster democratic participation. This involves exploring digital government services, online political participation, and digital democracy.

Human-Computer Interaction for Development (HCI4D)

Our team delves into the design and usage of user-friendly digital interfaces in developing contexts. We explore how good design can enhance user experience and promote wider ICT adoption.

Content Technologies and Digital Preservation

We examine content technologies including digital language tools and digital preservation techniques. This research helps in protecting cultural heritage and promoting diversity in the digital realm

Collaborative Open Innovation and ICT-Enabled Entrepreneurship

Our team investigates how ICT can spur entrepreneurship and innovation. We study open innovation platforms, digital entrepreneurship, and the role of ICT in business model innovation.

Societal Implications of Technology

We delve into the wider societal impacts of ICT. This involves exploring issues such as digital ethics, privacy, digital divide, and the effects of technology on social structures.

Mobile Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability

Our researchers study the use of mobile technology in agriculture (m-agriculture) and the role of ICT in promoting environmental sustainability.

E-Identity and Service in the Digital Economy

We explore the concept of digital identity and its role in the digital economy. This includes studying online service delivery, digital transactions, and the security and privacy implications of digital identity.

By exploring these diverse research areas, we hope to shed light on the immense potential of ICT for Development. Through our research, we aim to influence policy, inform practice, and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
