Decoding Professional Growth: Insights from Prof. Simon Msanjila
On 20th July 2023, The University of Dodoma’s ICT4D Research Lab held a workshop dedicated to building the research and development capacity of its researchers. Among the invited speakers, Prof. Simon Msanjila, a professor in systems engineering, held the audience’s attention with an enlightening session on professional development. Drawn from his extensive career across governmental roles and academia, Prof. Msanjila’s insights were both pragmatic and thought-provoking, sparking debate and reflection among the attendees. In this article, I will share some of the key takeaways from his session.
Deciphering Professional Development and Career Development
A standout portion of the session was his insightful exploration of the distinction between professional development and career development. Using compelling examples from his own career, he clarified a topic that often creates confusion.
As Prof. Msanjila clarified, professional development constitutes an enduring process of learning and honing skills within one’s profession or field. It encompasses a dedication to lifelong learning and an initiative to remain informed about the latest trends, skills, and knowledge relevant to one’s industry. He underscored the importance of self-driven learning in professional development by emphasizing, “you are capable of learning things by yourself if you have a PhD.“
In contrast, career development involves more emphasis on planning and career progression. It concerns setting career objectives, strategizing to attain them, and adjusting one’s career trajectory according to personal interests, market trends, and available opportunities. He skillfully demonstrated that these two processes, while distinct, are integral and mutually supportive in the path to career growth.
The Significance of Networking
Prof. Msanjila emphasized the importance of networking in the interconnected world of today with his advice to “always create and maintain a network.” Networking entails building and preserving relationships with individuals in comparable or related fields. It is more than making professional contacts; it is about cultivating meaningful connections that offer mutual benefits. These relationships can pave the way for opportunities, supply vital knowledge and counsel, provide support and guidance, and possibly lead to potential collaborations. Essentially, a robust network acts as a powerhouse of opportunities, resources, and support, making substantial contributions to professional advancement.
The Necessity of a Professional Online Presence
In the digital era, an online presence is essential rather than optional. “Make sure you are very present online,” Prof. Msanjila advised. A professional online presence concerns how you represent yourself and your work on the internet, including social media platforms, professional networking sites like LinkedIn, personal websites, or blogs.
He stipulated that upholding a professional online presence will display your skills, experiences, and expertise to prospective employers, clients, or professional connections. This digital presence acts as an online portfolio, amplifying your credibility, attracting fresh opportunities, and building a resilient professional reputation in the digital sphere.
The Importance of Mentorship and Preparing for Future Opportunities
Prof. Msanjila drew from a personal anecdote to underscore the value of mentorship in career development. Earlier in his career, he was offered various job opportunities. His mentor, however, advised him to prioritize job future stability (professional development) over a higher salary, highlighting the importance of long-term vision and stability in career choices. Prof. Msanjila cautioned, “mistakes can cost an entire profession,” as a reminder of the indispensable role mentors play in offering guidance, advice, and perspective, thus underscoring the significance of mentorship in professional development.
Conclusion
The session concluded with Prof. Msanjila’s thought-provoking question: “Would you choose a fast life without assurance or a slow life with assurance?” This question served as a reminder of the need to prioritize long-term career vision over short-term gains, emphasizing the importance of building a stable, fulfilling career rather than pursuing immediate success.
His insights were a stark reminder of the importance of fostering a strong professional network, creating a compelling online presence, and actively preparing for future opportunities as critical steps in professional development. His session highlighted the significance of lifelong learning, mentorship, and strategic planning in both professional and career development.
The workshop marked a pivotal stride towards promoting a culture of lifelong learning and professional growth among the researchers at college. The invaluable insights shared by Prof. Msanjila during his session will undoubtedly serve as guidance for them on their path toward achieving career goals.

Prof. Simon Msanjila is a professor of systems engineering with an extensive background in government and academia. Prior to joining the University of Dodoma, he held the position of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. He also served as the Deputy Rector of the College of Business Education. His illustrious career stands as a beacon of inspiration for budding professionals, and his practical wisdom offers a blueprint for success.
